Is it really necessary to buy a new mattress for a new baby?

Info I’ve been given by doctors etc, and that I’ve seen on the internet, says that you should always buy a new mattress for a new baby. Obviously I don’t want to take any risks but it seems kind of crazily wasteful that every baby needs a new mattress, which would then be worthless after they’d finished with it. My friend is giving me her old cot which comes with a mattess – should I buy a new mattress or use the one her child had?

Most crib mattresses are covered with plastic so they are easy to clean. If the mattress she gives you fits snugly in the crib and you can clean it, I personally would just use the mattress that comes with it. It’s not like you’re buying 2nd hand at a thrift store and don’t know what it’s been through.

If the mattress is still firm and all, and if it’s from someone you know and it is clean, I don’t think thee would be a problem. Here is a guide to choosing a good mattress. If your friend’s mattress has all the criterias, I would not worry too much

If it’s a friend that you trust took good care of the mattress, and she doesn’t own any pets, I would tend to say it’s OK to use it. I would check the mattress for dips in the middle, torn fabric, etc. to make sure it’s in good condition.
I used the same mattress for 3 of my kids….no troubles.

i used the same crib mattress for all three of my kids as well and had no issues but my kids were born very close together so its not like the mattress had a chance to get old or damaged, it never actually left the crib. we just made sure it was still firm, had rips/tears in it and cleaned it before each baby. they are not the expensive if you really feel worried about it then just buy a new one.
