Is a foundation really necessary for a Tempurpedic memory foam mattress?
Question by cornpuff: Is a foundation really necessary for a Tempurpedic memory foam mattress?
Im looking to buy a Tempurpedic mattress. However, the foundation for a king size is going to cost $ 500 more. I was almost wondering if it was really worth it. I was hoping to get some insight on whether or not I should get the foundation. I suppose I can always buy it later if I need to. I would prefer answers from people who know from experience.

foundation =their box springs, No you just need it on a hard flat surface, not a traditional box spring that will flex.

The mattress can be placed on a platform and still performs just fine without affecting comfort. If you put it on just a hollywood bed frame, you do risk damage because it is intended to sit on top of a foundation of some sort and is constructed to do so.
yes and no. just make sure whatever alternate foundation you decide to go with is laying completely flat.
it won’t work on foundations/box springs from most major manufacturers (sealy, serta, simmons, spring air, etc) because their foundations don’t lay flat. they’ll have dips/gaps in them. which the memory foam will sink through.
another thing to keep in mind is any mattress manufacturer reserves the right to not honor your warranty is a mattress isn’t on their foundation/box spring.
Depending on what kind of frame your set is laying on you may want to look into bunkie boards, which lay flat and are fairly inexpensive ( $ 59-$ 79/each for a king set).
They will not warranty it on someone else’s box spring / foundation.
They will warranty it on a platform bed.
It is your bed; don’t get caught
Today most boxsprings are rigid just like the foundations used on Tempur Pedics and have absolutely no give (springyness). The idea that it can sag through the top is incorrect. Tempur Pedic uses very similar base foam to one sided mattress being sold today and it should sit just fine on top of one. A memory foam mattress needs to be on a smooth flat surface, whether its your floor, box spring/foundation or if it’s a platform bed be sure the slats are no more than 3″ apart. If your current foundation is in good condition you can use it, however read their warranty information, they may not honor if it you do not purchase a new foundation at the same time of the mattress.
If you have a platform bed or older foundation, place a piece of cardboard or plywood over top and cover it as to not harm the bottom of the mattress so you are properly supported. Enjoy your new bed!
