Hello,

Yes memory foam is a petroleum based product. But I’m not sure if your issue is with flammability or inhalation.

Memory foam is flammable, so it would be dangerous to mix with the use of oxygen and a flame. But if you introduce a flame in the presence of oxygen, most objects in a bedroom would be susceptible to burning.

Under normal circumstances, memory foam poses no health risks. Even out-gasing, which occurs shortly after the foam is produced, and then quickly fades, has not been shown to cause any health problems. I would guess that oxygen would not negatively influence the health affect of memory foam.

To address this issue with authority, contact the Polyurethane Foam Association (PFA). Their mission is to educate customers and other groups about flexible polyurethane foam (FPF). This includes providing facts on environmental, health, and safety issues.

They have a contact form on their site where they will answer your question.

Check with your doctor. Why take chances. Yes, memory foam is made from petrolum based chemicals and research shows it is harmless, but in your case, why not just make sure you're not going to cause yourself trouble. New memory foam products do tend to off-gas for a period of time.

Yes. The foam is made from petroleum based chemicals. However, the foam is encapsulated, so there will be no interaction with your use of oxygen. You do not have to worry.
