I just bought a new mattress this week without box spring. No, it is not necessary to buy both. But beware, salespeople may tell you it’s necessary. With some companies, the warranty is void if you do not buy the entire set.

If your old one is in good shape, then no. However, box springs can break down, just like a mattress can. If that’s the case, then you won’t get the full support of the new mattress.

New Platform beds don’t require a box spring, you can simply top with a standard mattress.

Standard / traditional beds do require a box spring with your mattress purchase. They’ll help to stabilize the mattress and extend its life.

You should NEVER re-use an old box spring with a new mattress. You’ll be wasting the money on a great new top mattress that isn’t supported properly – shortening the life of the top mattress and your new investment!
