Best mattress for mid back pain?
Question by Heather: Best mattress for mid back pain?
I’ve been experiencing mid back pain on my right side after being asleep for about 4 hours for over a year now. It hurts so bad, I just have to get up to relieve the discomfort, and then I am fine the rest of the day. We just replaced our 8 year old Kingsdown mattress (after we’d already purchased a 4 inch Sealey memory foam topper for last year) We just purchased a Telluride from Denver Mattress, it is a medium firm pocketed coil with latex foam on the top. I’m still having the exact same problem.
I sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees. We’ve had the new bed for 3 full weeks now, if I am going to return it to try something different, I will have to do so by next weekend.

I’ve had great success with a waterbed that had lumbar support built in, it has a whole body massager under the mattress. But it’s a roll of the dice, some people get no relief from them.
I’ve heard great things about the new organic latex mattresses and you can get them in an adjustable frame too. I think if I were in your situation I’d look into an adjustable mattress.

Do not get a water bed at all. Memory foam can be okay but many experts still say to use a high quality regular mattress that is medium firm with no topper- except a pillow top is ok. To relieve back tension, the recommended posture is usually to sleep on your back with your legs straight but elevated about 6″-10″ or so. Everyone is different- see what works for you. Using a pillow between your legs when you are on your side is also good. There are just so many other things you could be trying. Email me if you want to chat some day- I’m not a doc but I might be able to help you. In brief, you have to look at your “Symptoms” in their broader context as pain is simply a warning of a malady e.g., what is the root cause and how can you address it. Why after 4 hours? This is a telling clue but again, only one piece. Have you had an MRI- you should! Also, read 7 Steps to Healing Back Pain – McKenzie. It’s THE book for your type of issue- just read the glowing reviews on Amazon.com.

I think you can see from your own description that back problems cannot be resolved with a mattress. You’ll Keep buying them and they will fail to resolve your problem. They are made in essentially a cookie cutter design one size fits all. You simply need to try various things. Each time you try something new you need to wait out the adjustment period of about 30 days. This is the time needed to get used to something new in a mattress, topper, pillow etc.
Books, doctors, chiropractors, and strengthening exercises are your best bet.
